Reducing choices is not about making a website simplistic. It is about making the next decision obvious enough that users can keep moving.
Many websites become difficult to use because every internal stakeholder gets a visible route from every page. The result looks comprehensive, but the visitor has to decide which of several equally loud options deserves attention before they have enough context to choose well.
Choice overload is usually a hierarchy problem.
The issue is rarely the raw number of links on the website. Large sites can work well when options are grouped, labelled and revealed at the right moment. The problem appears when too many choices compete at the same level of visual importance.
Nielsen Norman Group’s research on decision making focuses on helping users compare and distinguish options rather than simply removing them. That is a useful design principle: clarify the choice architecture before reducing content.
Give each page one dominant job.
A homepage may orient users and route them. A service page may build confidence and move qualified visitors toward a conversation. A resource page may help someone complete a planning task. Once the page job is clear, the primary action becomes easier to define.
Secondary links can still exist, but they should not look as important as the action the page was designed to support.
Use progressive disclosure for complexity.
Complex services, pricing structures and technical information often need depth. Instead of showing all of that depth at once, structure the journey so users can first understand the headline decision and then reveal the detail they need.
The goal is to reduce cognitive load without hiding information. Good disclosure patterns preserve access while keeping the first screen and first decision manageable.
Make differences between options explicit.
Three vague service cards can be harder to choose between than six clearly differentiated ones. Labels should explain who the option is for, what problem it solves and what happens next. When options overlap, visitors spend more effort interpreting the website instead of evaluating the offer.
This is especially important for professional services where visitors may not know the internal terminology your team uses.
Measure whether simplification improves progress.
After reducing competing actions, look at the behavior around the intended route. Do more users reach the relevant service page? Do fewer people loop through navigation? Does the form start rate improve? The redesign should make progress easier, not merely make the page look cleaner.
A simpler visual interface is useful only when the underlying decision becomes simpler too.

- Navigation labels that overlap or use internal terminology
- Service pages that send users in several unrelated directions
- Long forms asking for information before it is necessary
- Content blocks that reveal detail before the visitor has chosen a path
- Secondary actions styled with the same prominence as the main action
